چکیده

More than 20% of all dogs in the United States suffer from lameness and pain associated with chronic osteoarthritis (OA). Many times the current therapeutic modalities are not well tolerated by the pet leaving, few choices for alleviating suffering. Regenerative medicine brings new modalities that may aid dogs that either do not respond to or cannot tolerate traditional therapy. The present study evaluated the efficacy of porcine urinary bladder extracellular matrix (UBMECM), an acellular bio-inductive scaffold, to treat dogs with osteoarthritis of the hip joint. This study demonstrates that a single intra-articular injection of UBM-ECM significantly improved activity, lameness, and range of motion scores compared to control dogs. This is the first randomized controlled clinical trial reporting the effectiveness of a bioinductive scaffold in dogs with OA.

The Effect of Alendronate on Symptoms of Knee Osteoarthritis: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Background: Knee osteoarthritis is a common degenerative joint disorder and a major cause of pain and disability. Recent studies have suggested that bisphosphonates such as alendronate may have a role in the treatment of osteoarthritis. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the potential effect of alendronate on the symptoms of knee osteoarthritis. Methods: Thirty nine patients wi...

The effect of doxycycline on canine hip osteoarthritis: design of a 6-months clinical trial

Twenty-five dogs were included in a randomized, double-blind trial to assess the efficacy of doxycycline (DOX) orally administered twice a day at 4 mg/kg/day (n = 12) for the treatment of osteoarthritis of the hip. Chondroitin sulfate (CS; 525 mg/day) was used as a positive control (n = 13). Dogs were re-examined monthly for 6 months after initiation of treatment. The assessment protocol includ...
